I have some vivid recollections about my metal detecting in Thailand. The thing that amuses me the most (and sometimes annoys me) is the inevitable curiosity that metal detecting arouses. Thais (mostly males) usually come up and abruptly ask “tam alai”, and my answer inside my head is usually “minding my own business” or something to that effect. Others are more laid back and just observe what I am doing. My pet hate are the “followers”, usually kids that have been left to their own devices by their parents. They will follow for hours and stick their head in every hole. Some even claw through the sand as it hits the sand….aahhhhh!
Anyway back to my story…one night at about 1am in the morning I was hunting on a beach near Rayong at low tide. I had a good signal and was digging a rather large hole. All of a sudden half a dozen sweet smelling pretty young teenage Thai girls in their pajamas turned up and began peering into the hole…all I could see was the backs of their heads…I was too impressed to be annoyed. Only in Thailand could this happen. Eventually they drifted away and I resumed my hunt, pondering the absurdity of the preceding event…

I sometimes feel like I just got off an alien spacecraft with some of the looks I get!

But, most are friendly and have never seen a metal detector before.

I also get looks and questions from the tourists here too.

My favorite is I hang a small plastic bag on my pouch for trash – and most Thais think I am hunting for bottle caps – have even had small kids pick up bottle caps to give to me. I just smile.
