I will be heading out for a 6-day beach hunt from 5-10 July and hope to finally find some Thai gold. I have been bugging my wife to go to the beach and she finally gave in and I got approval to go and to go alone.  This will be nice – no guilt about leaving my wife in the hotel room while I am on the beach or in the water.  I also plan to meet up with a guy who lives near Jomtien – so I will have a hunting partner.

This is a major operation for me.  I had to book a flight from Khon Kaen to Bangkok (6,350 Thai baht round trip) and also book a hotel (6,200 Thai baht) – they had a special – stay 5 nights and pay for 4.  And, I had to book a ride from Bangkok to Jomtien (1,500 Thai baht).

My wife has allotted a 700 Thai baht per day limit for me – so I have to eat and drink on about 20 bucks per day.

The trip will set me back about $500 total – but I will get to hunt for 6 days.

Minelab Excalibur II 800

I will be using my Minelab Excalibur II 800 to hunt dry sand, wet sand, and go in the water.  I will bring another detector, my ACE 250, as a backup – just in case.  I don’t want to go that far and have my primary metal detector crap out and not be able to hunt.

I will be loaded down with electronics – camera, video cam, 220-110 converter, chargers for the detectors, batteries and chargers, laptop and Walkman.

I also have my sand scoops in for repair/modification – that will be another post.

I just hope I find enough to offset the cost of the trip – that would be nice.

Hi L, towards the end of your trip to Jomtein the tides will be more favourable for detecting. New Moon is on 12 July so the low tide will be best around then – around 0.8 metre. Early in your trip the tides will be within the 1-2 metre mark and fairly flat – eg 5 July low tide will be 1.89 metres and high tide 2.08 metres.
Here is the web site I use for the tides here…

I wish you well on your trip…Have fun…
